Lee’s Summit is a vibrant community that offers many opportunities for residents to volunteer. The city has many boards and commissions that residents can participate in.
Lee’s Summit has an exciting history that dates back to 1812 when John Hicklin entered this area. The Osage Indians, who were the first residents of this area, vacated their lands, leaving thousands of acres open for settlement. Jackson County was attractive to early settlers because of its streams and lush green prairies. The first housing that was built was log cabins. These humble structures sometimes housed as many as 10 family members. The cabins gave way to the first clapboard farm houses that we see in historic photos. As farms became successful, the size of the homes increased. During the Civil War, we lost these early homes to the brutal order#11 that banished all southern sympathizers to counties outside of Jackson, Bates, and parts of other counties. After families moved, their homes were burned, and their livestock was stolen by Union forces. During that time Union forces robbed and murdered their way through all of the above mentioned counties. Many bloody skirmishes were fought in this area during the Civil War. The bloodiest was in Lone Jack, where hundreds of Union and Confederate forces lost their lives. Many horses were killed as well.
Many folks have heard of Quantrills Raiders and Cole Younger. All though Quantrill was not at the Battle of Lone Jack, Cole Younger was. Cole performed many heroic deeds during the battle. You can find out more information about the Battle of Lone Jack by visiting the Lone Jack Battlefield Museum, located at 301 South Bynum Road Lone Jack, Missouri 64070, fifteen miles southeast of Lee’s Summit. You can reach the museum at 816- 697-8833.
